USE OF RECYCLED CONCRETE AS A ROAD PAVEMENT MATERIAL WITHIN AUSTRALIA

The amount of recycling practised by urban municipalities throughout Australia was assessed by surveying 156 of them. One hundred and eight replied and 43 per cent of these are engaged in concrete recycling. An annual demand of 600,000 tonnes of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) for use in road bases is estimated. RCA samples were taken from the stockpile of a commercial producer at monthly intervals for six months and tested for grading, PI, compaction, marginal and unsuitable materials, and Los Angeles abrasion loss. They were all consistent and within a VicRoads specification for sub-base material. LA abrasion loss was consistently 29 per cent. To assess the effect on RCA hardness of different source concrete strengths, laboratory specimens with strengths of 32 MPa and 80 MPa were made and crushed. Particle breakdown under compaction and LA abrasion loss was determined. The laboratory concretes suffered almost identical breakdown, and had LA losses of 26 and 27 per cent. It is concluded that variation in source concrete strength has little effect on these properties. (a) For the covering abstract of this conference see IRRD abstract no. 861222.
