THE GLOBAL RAIL REVIVAL
Article examining the role of railroads in society from the 1890s up to the present. Factors such as America's fascination with cars, federal disinvestment in rail, and outright conspiracy crippled U.S. train travel. The author compares and contrasts the role of railroads in Western Europe, Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Japan, China, India, and Africa. Light rail and MAGLEV are discussed as up-and-coming players in the commuter scenario in the U.S. and Europe.
