EFFECTS OF COUNTY-LEVEL ALCOHOL PROHIBITION ON MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS
All motor vehicle accidents in Kentucky were analyzed over a four-year period to determine if counties that prohibit the sale of alcohol have lower crash rates. The data reveal that dry counties have a lower rate of alcohol-related fatalities and significantly lower rates of alcohol-related nonfatal and property accidents. The authors caution that the results should not be taken as a general prescription for alcohol regulation since the counties studied are dry by choice.
