PUBLIC/PRIVATE SECTOR INTERACTION KEY TO SAFETY IN 21ST CENTURY
Key legislation, such as the Intermodal Surface Transportation Act and the Clean Air Act, provides opportunities for traffic engineers to impact multimodal transportation systems of the future. The author writes that new partnerships among rail, port, highway, and airport infrastructures must emerge and government must work closely with the private sector, especially in the area of traffic materials. Governments--state and local--must be receptive to new products and more effective means of installation and maintenance. In addition, training and education in the use of safety devices in work zones and pavement marking techniques may enhance efforts. The author reminds readers that many forums exist to share experiences in meaningful ways. Virginia is the state example used in this article.
