PRIVATISATION OF TRAFFIC CONTROL, SURVEILLANCE AND RELATED SYSTEMS IN THE KLANG VALLEY, MALAYSIA

The traffic control system proposed for the road network of the Klang Valley area of Kuala Lumpur is described. The findings of a feasibility study carried out in 1992 into traffic conditions in the area are listed. The problems identified included increasing traffic, a basic form of traffic control, a variable standard of signing, red light running and poorly controlled parking. Recommendations made by the study are listed. The main recommendation was an overall traffic management system which would optimise the use of the current road network and the use of modern technology to improve it. Specific systems which were proposed are listed. They include: a) a UTC (Urban Traffic Control) system, b) an expressway monitoring system, c) bus lanes and bus priority, d) a traffic information centre, e)a GIS (Geographical Information System) system, f) red light cameras and g) a computerised ticket processing system. The project will be privatelyoperated and funded by parking charges. For the covering abstract see IRRD 865401.
