ROMANSE (ROAD MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR EUROPE) PROJECT

The components of Southampton's ROMANSE (ROad MANagement System for Europe) project are described. Aimed at encouraging the use of more environmentally-friendly modes of transport in the city, the system uses a variety of Advanced Transport Telematics techniques to monitor transport systems and provide up-to-date information to travellers. The systems involved are briefly described including a) the SCOOT 2.4 urban traffic control system, b) the STOPWATCH bus location and passenger information system, c) public access terminals, d) the CONTRAM traffic network model, e) variable message signs, f) a Geographical Information System and g) a Radio Data System and Traffic Message Channel. Evaluation of the systems is complex and being tackled in three categories - a) efficiency of technology, b) impact on travel behaviour and c) economic impact.
