NEW TEAMS ON LONDON ROADS
On the 4th of July 1994, responsibilty for parking enforcement in London changed from the police to the London Boroughs, and the City of London Corporation. The changeover has been gradual with some authorities already using the new system. Fifteen of the 33 London Boroughs have awarded contracts to private operators (such as Sureway, Sterling-Granada, Apcoa, CPS and the Lewis Group), rather than operating in-house. The new style parking attendants, which have replaced police traffic wardens, use hand-held computers to issue tickets. The system will enable persistent offenders to be identified. A key co-ordinating role is played by the Parking Committee for London. It is hoped that improved enforcement will reduce traffic congestion, and increase parking capacity in the capital.
