OUTLOOK FOR FUEL EFFICIENCY IN AUTOMOBILES IN THE USSR: SOCIAL AND ECOLOGICAL ASPECTS
The author considers the current level of transport activity in the USSR and anticipates the effect of increases expected due to a demand for passenger cars and increased economic activity. She considers whether the USSR will be able to supply this demand and what will be the effect on energy consumption and emissions. The solution is considered to be improved fuel efficiency. Estimates are made of possible improvements that can be made to the Russian fleet of trucks and cars based on the best technology developed elsewhere. The use of catalytic converters, improved fuel quality and alternative fuels are also considered and a number of problems identified. For the covering abstract see IRRD 864909.
