THE MARKET FOR ENERGY EFFICIENT VEHICLES
Energy efficiency technologies which are available to manufacturers are listed and their potential energy savings indicated. Three main market factors which will stimulate energy efficiency improvements are discussed. These comprise: a) competition between motor vehicle manufacturers for market share which may lead to the introduction of innovations which offer a reduction in operating costs, b) environmental emissions controls leading to the redesign of engines which may have additional benefits in terms of fuel consumption and c) the wider diffusion of existing technology as older vehicles are replaced. Taking these factors into account it is estimated that a net improvement to energy efficiency of between 20-30% could be achieved by the year 2010. For the covering abstract see IRRD 864909.
