NOISELESS ROAD SURFACES OF STONE MASTIC ASPHALT

GELUIDSARME WEGDEKKEN VAN STEENMASTIEKASFALT

This article discusses the measurement results, conclusions, and recommendations of an investigation that was carried out in 1992 and 1993 by order of the Dutch province of Overijssel into the noise reducing properties of stone mastic asphalt (SMA). After a discussion of the rolling noise phenomenon, in which vibration of the tyres, air pumping, and noise absorption by the road surface play an important role, the noise measurements are discussed. These were carried out on seven test sections on the N732 provincial road. The test sections consisted of the following wearing courses: SMA 0/11; PAC 0/16 (porous asphaltic concrete); DAC 0/16 (dense asphaltic concrete); SMA 0/8; SMA 0/6; surface dressing moraine chippings 4/8 and 2/6; emulsion concrete (20 kg/m2). The SMA, PAC, and DAC wearing courses were not spreaded with chippings, as this masks the texture and noise reduction of the actual road surfaces. The following measurements were carried out: a) absorption measurements; b) texture measurements; c) statistical pass by (SPB) measurements; d) sound spectra measurements. One of the conclusions of the investigation is that SMA 0/6 gives a noise reduction of 1.6 dB(A) with regard to the DAC under conditions of outer urban traffic. This reduction is practically independent of the driving speed.
