TRAFFIC RESTRAINTS IN THE CITY OF TEHERAN. LOCAL BUS SERVICE IN THE CENTRAL TRAFFIC ZONE

Some steps towards achieving a reorganisation on the traffic have already been taken in Teheran's most important traffic zones. There are: one way streets, a restriction in the number of connections between small roads and large streets, only authorised vehicles, special "bus only" lanes on some routes and tollgates. However, these measures are not sufficient. Evidence of this can be seen in long queues, traffic jams and the high level of noise. The polluted air also causes a lot of people to suffer from throat and eye infections. To improve traffic conditions, the existing measures need to be complemented. These complementary measures are: an increase in the number of reserved bus lanes, a reduction in the number of authorised vehicles, stricter control at tollgates, parking prohibition in large streets and multiple-level (Non-crossing) intersection in the most traffic frequented crossroads. An improvement in the local bus service will be made by: replacing existing buses with so called "joint" buses, improving control to and from the airpoint and railway station, reducing exchange points to a minimum, reducing the distance to bus stops in order to facilitate connections, having conductors on all buses, making it possible to travel on the same route in both directions and improving the standard of the buses and making them environmentally friendly. The result of the "theoretical" steps will be that local buses will achieve a speed that is about 3 times higher than the existing speed. This will result in shorter journeys. Every 10 minutes a bus will be available at all bus stops within the traffic zone making local traffic more attractive. (A)
