NEURAL NETWORK APPLICATIONS IN TRANSPORTATION. FINAL REPORT
The ability of neural networks to solve previously intractable computing problems is of concern to transportation. This study has two objectives: to sensitize transportation managers to the capabilities of neural networks, and to identify potential applications in transportation. This document contains a tutorial-type introduction to neural networks, and greater detail about the major classes of applications and types of neural networks. The types of applications are categorized as classification, prediction, sensor fusion, optimization, control, storage, and new computing paradigms. About 100 potential applications have been found, of which 12 are singled out for more detailed analysis. Canada has world-class researchers and application developers, but the funding of neural network research and development is far below all other industrialized countries.
