IMPLEMENTATION OF IVHS TECHNOLOGIES UNDER BRISBANE'S LINKED INTERSECTION SIGNAL SYSTEM - BLISS

The Brisbane, Australia City Council has developed a computerized traffic signal coordination system which not only provides optimum signal timing plans but at the same time has all the features considered necessary for a total traffic management system. The system is known as BLISS (Brisbane's Linked Intersection Signal System). The most unique feature of the system is that it is entirely PC-based. The network is divided into regions where a single PC can coordinate up to 63 sets of traffic signals. There are eleven regions at present supervised by a system master, which is also a PC. Other features such as automatic traffic counting, emergency vehicle and bus priority are standard on the system. Lamp and vehicle detector failures are automatically recorded and dispatched via the network and pager to standby traffic maintenance staff.
