PROBLEMS OF SHIP VIBRATION: PRESENT SOLUTIONS AND FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS
The paper represents an introductory study into the problems of ship vibration. It describes the present state-of-the-art in the methods for analyzing vibration and elaborates on the difficulties regarding the determination of the vibration parameters, i.e. stiffness, damping, effective mass and excitation forces. Some suggestions to enable better modelling of the ship structure and a more reliable treatment of the vibration parameters are given. The numerical methods for vibration analysis are discussed and as an improvement the mode superposition method for arbitrary damping is presented. Finally, some recommendations for further investigations into the problems of ship vibration are given and the present efforts of Det Norske Veritas in this field are outlined.
