FUTURE TRENDS OF MATERIALS AND WELDING TECHNOLOGY FOR MARINE STRUCTURES
Part I presents a general discussion. After a short historical overview, a discussion is made of factors which affect the use of new technology and the potential problems in the early stages of application. Then an overview of future marine structures is also presented. Part II discusses materials, their possible uses and problems. Materials covered include steels, aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, and nonmetallic materials (fiberglass- reinforced plastics and other filamentous composites, glass and ceramics, and concrete). The most detailed information is given on steels, especially high-strength steels. Part III covers welding technology. First, a discussion is made of future use of various welding techniques for marine structures. The techniques discussed include current welding processes as well as new and special techniques such as electron beam welding, laser welding, and underwater welding. A discussion is also given on automation and computer applications.
