TRENDS IN ELECTRIC CABLE DESIGN FOR SHIPBOARD SERVICE
The evolution of electric shipboard cable designs has brought about many changes since 1890, and essential factors are traced. Naval designs have frequently led the way, but service requirements for Merchant Marine cables differ, resulting in differing designs. Materials currently employed as conductors, insulations and coverages are discussed, and proposed changes are discussed for both Navy and Merchant Marine types. Heat ratings of insulations are shown and their relationship to ampacities are indicated. The positive and negative aspects of armor are reviewed and trends shown. Fires and fire resistance of cables are discussed at some length, and reference to smoke generation are included, along with positions held by regulatory bodies. The possibility of new designs is noted, and references are made to cryogenic cables, fire-resisting telephone cables, intra-compartment cables and hydrofoil cables. Throughout, historical references are made, to serve as a background for present status and future changes.
