HIGH ALUMINA CEMENT (HAC) CONCRETE
This volume contains basic information about high alumina cement, its chemical constitution and manufacture. Data are presented on its physical properties, chemical resistance, and high early strength, its use in refractories, structural precast concrete foundations and in-situ structural work. The conversion process and the factors which affect it are described. Details are given of long-term laboratory tests and the lessons which may be learned from long-term failures. Mention is made of such structural failures in France and of structures in sea water and in piles. Failures at the camden and stepney schools and the university of leicester are described. Rules on the use of hac in structures are cited together with the attitudes of the manufacturers and the technical press. Methods of appraisal of existing structures including differential thermal analysis of hac are outlined. Core, ultrasonic pulse velocity, load and distructive tests are considered in some detail. The continuous monitoring of hac structures is dealt with and the present situation of hac in concrete building is reviewed. An extensive bibliography is appended. /TRRL/
