THE CHANNEL TUNNEL AND ALTERNATIVE CROSS CHANNEL SERVICES
After a brief description of the background to the project and of the tunnel as planned, mention is made of the various studies already published on this subject. In chapter 2 "the tunnel and the alternatives to it" are considered and details are given of the categories of cross channel traffic. Past growth in traffic by various modes is noted and forecasts of future traffic are made. A section covers the potential gains and losses to the UK, and information is included on the commercial viability of the project. In considering the key issues involved, with and without tunnel, details are given of cross channel fleets required together with hovercraft services and the costs involved. An illustration of the cost/benefit results of the various alternatives including postponement are included. Finally conclusions are drawn on the studies undertaken and the project. /TRRL/
