THE STRENGTHENING OF CONCRETE BEAMS BY BONDED STEEL PLATES
It may sometimes be necessary to strengthen existing concrete bridges. One method is that of bonding steel reinforcing plates to the structure with epoxy resin. To study the use of this method for strengthening beams in flexure comparative tests have been made on two reinforced concrete beams, one with the addition of a reinforcing plate and one without. The results show that for the type of beam tested the crack widths were substantially reduced (equivalent to a doubling of the applied bending moment permitted by the limit of serviceability) although the ultimate moment was increased by only 18 per cent. The results are also compared with a simple analysis and practical considerations are reviewed. (A) /TRRL/
