FUTURE VEHICLE FUELS

Present fuel technology must be re-oriented towards increased use of alternative fuels. The important issues are to secure future fuel supplies, develop methods for enhanced energy utilisation, and achieve a better ecological balance. Petrol will be made from coal, shale and oil-bearing sand. Increased use of natural gas is likely in sectors with favourable economic and distribution conditions, such as stationary plant, and as chemical raw material. Methyl alcohol can be used as a substitute for petrol; it can be made from coal or natural gas. Hydrogen gas can be made by reduction of steam and by electrolysis; it cannot be distributed easily but can be made into methyl alcohol or converted into metal hydrides for later generation of hydrogen gas. Assessment of future potentials of alternative fuels must be based on availability, cost, engine and environmental considerations, and ease of handling. The three groups of fuels with a large potential are synthetic petrols and diesel fuels, methyl alcohol and hydrogen gas. The latter two in particular are of great interest. /TRRL/
