RAN-OFF-ROAD ACCIDENTS AND THE SIDE CLEARANCE OF THE ROAD. STAGE 1 B - A PILOT STUDY IN THE COUNTY OF SOEDERMANLAND, SWEDEN
AVKOERNINGSOLYCKOR OCH VAEGENS SIDOUTRYMME. ETAPP 1 B - PILOTSTUDIE I SOEDERMANLANDS LAEN
This study aims at providing guide lines and information necessary for planning and implementation of a more comprehensive investigation, the object of which will be to find appropriate measures relating to the road, the traffic and the clearance provided at the sides of the road, in order to reduce the number of ran-off-road accidents and to lessen the injury caused by these accidents. The material analyzed was police reported accidents, which occurred in soedermanland during 1969-71. Of the ran-off-road accidents 59% were single vehicle accidents, 14% involved two vehicles meeting and 13% were the result of an overtaking manoeuvre. In the 719 accidents analyzed, 15 people were killed, 90 badly injured and 242 slightly injured, while 705 people escaped without injury. The alignment of the road, both vertical and horizontal alignment but especially the latter, exhibits a pronounced effect on the risk of ran-off-road accidents. Objects such as trees, rocks, lighting columns etc. situated in side clearances cause serious injuries when hit by a vehicle when it leaves the road. Collisions with rigid objects cause more serious injuries than collisions with non-rigid objects. By removing all road side obstacles near the road the exposition to risk of collision should be greatly reduced. /TRRL/
