PSYCHOLOGICAL-BEHAVIOR STRATEGIES FOR ACCIDENT CONTROL: A SYSTEM FOR DIAGNOSIS AND INTERVENTION

The objective is that of putting into the hands of the safety practitioner tools which permit the meaningful application of behavioral science approaches to controlling specific occupational accident and illness problems. The Diagnostic Safety Form is the primary gathering component of the system. The form is a comprehensive diagnostic inventory, designed to assess job safety needs. Two types of modules based on organizational psychology techniques are used: (1) those whose implementation is directed by the safety practitioner in coordination with others in the organization; and (2) those that fall outside the safety practitioner's primary responsiblity but to which he should have considerable input since the factors treated by the module impact directly on safety. Other types of modules are those based on ergonomic techniques, modules based on training techniques, and modules based on behavior modification techniques. Thus a system for psychological behavior strategies would involve three components: (1) a diagnostic procedure, (2) intervention techniques (or action modules), and (3) a procedure for linking the diagnosis to the intervention techniques. With these three components, the necessary ingredients for a self-diagnosis and remedial scheme would be established. (MW)
