RESEARCH COLLABORATION: NEW EUROPEAN INITIATIVES

This is a short conference presentation on recent developments in research collaboration in Europe, especially on highway research and traffic safety. National research institutes and laboratories are conducting the whole range of research and development, including laboratory, pilot and full-scale experiments. The European Community (EC) recognises the need for a multi-national European programme of transport research, especially highways research. The Forum of European National Highway Research Laboratories (FEHRL), formed in October 1989, is a grouping of the Directors of national road research laboratories in 18 countries. It has proposed an intersectoral, interdisciplinary Strategic European Road Research Programme, comprising a road information system, a research programme and an implementation phase. It will provide a framework for developing European cooperation in highway research. The Forum of European Road Safety Research Institutes (FERSI) was formed in March 1991; it aims to: (1) provide research-based scientific input to the road safety policies and practices of inter-governmental bodies and national and local governments in Europe; (2) promote closer collaboration between European institutes conducting research in road safety.
