EUROPE ON THE MOVE: RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN EUROPEAN COMMUNICATIONS AND TRANSPORT ACTIVITY RESEARCH. CHAPTER 14. PASSENGER AIR TRAFFIC AT THE REGIONAL LEVEL IN EUROPE: A TRANSPORT STRATEGY TOWARDS INTEGRATION

The role of passenger air travel in current transport networks is considered. A survey is described at the European level, of regional air links in the context of recent developments in fast means of transport and their integration. Four issues are addressed: a) general aspects of airline networks, b) the development of regional air services in some western European countries, c) the identification and classification of nodes and networks and d) the role of regional air traffic at a national and international level. Statistics are considered from Italy, the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Portugal, Spain and Greece. Common features are identified and 3 main types of pattern described.
