STATISTICAL SAMPLE SIZE FOR CONSTRUCTION OF SOIL LINERS

This technical paper presents a hydraulic conductivity-based statistical method to select sampling size for quality control measurements performed during construction of compacted soil liners. The method accounts for the properties of the soil being used, the maximum allowable equivalent hydraulic conductivity, and the number of lifts in the liner. The method consists of three steps: 1) using regression to relate spatial variability of common construction quality control measurements to statistics describing spatial variability of point-scale measurements of hydraulic conductivity, 2) using the statistics describing spatial variability of point-scale hydraulic conductivity to estimate the equivalent hydraulic conductivity of the liner, and 3) computing the estimation error for equivalent hydraulic conductivity and the probability that the equivalent hydraulic conductivity exceeds a predefined maximum. A procedure to determine sample size is presented and charts are provided for selecting the sample size based on several factors.
