PLANES, TRAINS AND THE GAMES

When the Summer Olympic Games open in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1996, two major transportation infrastructure projects will have been completed: a new concourse at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport and a 9.7-km (6 m) extension of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) system. "Concourse E" was part of the airport's 20-year master plan, but came into light when Atlanta was chosen to host the games. Besides the main concourse structure, an extension of the people-mover system and construction of an underground train facility are planned. MARTA is extending its North Line, adding three stations in heavily populated North Atlanta where visitors will have increased access to hotels, shopping, and Olympic venues. To date, all airport and MARTA construction contractors have met tight schedules.
