CORROSION, ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS KEY WHEN ASSESSING DEICER ALTERNATIVES
This paper is a brief recap of a conference presentation regarding the use of chemical deicers. Officials must weigh the benefits of the deicer against possible accelerated scaling in concrete pavements and some adverse environmental impacts. The paper describes the advantages and disadvantages of the following deicers: calcium chloride, calcium magnesium acetate, urea, ethylene glycol, potassium acetate, magnesium chloride, abrasives (sand), and salt.
