FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH ON ASPHALT MIXES; PRACTICAL DESIGN AND APPLICATIONS

The author states that the practical value of research is increased drastically if it influences contracts between authorities and contractors, although science for the sake of science should not be undervalued. Conferences on Bridging and/or Paving the Gap (Ann Arbor 1972, ISAP 1992) are landmarks for the continuous striving of researchers and practitioners to benefit from each other. The plea of Roger L. Yarborough (Final session Ann Arbor, 1987) should be mentioned here. Translation of fundamental results to practically applicable prescriptions implies leaving the rules for development of scientific knowledge, as it implies changing existing methods for designing and constructing asphaltic roads.
