BICYCLES FOR MOBILITY
Lower income groups who use the bicycle as a means of transport, are overlooked in most transportation planning studies. For example, the World Bank Policy Study on Urban Transport in Developing Countries (1986) entirely failed to mention bicycles! Even in regions where bicycle usage is extremely high, the bicycle is in danger of being systematically eradicated. In Indonesia instead of this popular mode of transport being supported, bicycles are being banned from the center of the city to make way for the automobile. This is a very questionable step toward "modernization" of the urban transportation sector.
