SENSOR DEVELOPMENTS CRUCIAL TO MEASUREMENT AND EXHAUST EMISSION C
Forthcoming European legislation for exhaust emissions will inclu 'on-board diagnostics' requirement. This article describes some appropriate equipment, including a new generation of sensors. Th required instrumentation will detect the malfunction of emissions related components, and warn drivers. Three-way catalysts have s serious problems. For example, cars using them pollute considera more for a regular series of short journeys than for one journey same length. Zirconia sensors are the most common exhaust sensors in feedback control circuitry for catalytic converters, but they unsuitable for applications requiring information on the degree o richness or leanness. Metal oxide sensors have several disadvant but also several significant advantages. Therefore, they should continue to be investigated. Tin dioxide has been used almost en in sensors to detect inflammable or toxic gases in the atmosphere are used to activate alarms. Its low-temperature operation and o qualities make it a potentially useful material. Several techniq have been proposed to detect catalyst degradation.
