AIRPORT EXTENSION OPENS ASIAN GATEWAY
This short article describes the airport extension, whose opening in 1993 marked the latest phase in the metro development programme. The 3.3 km extension from Hakata to Fukuoka-Kuko makes Fukuoka International Airport the only airport in Japan with a direct urban metrolink. It connects the airport to the city centre in just 10 minutes, and is extremely popular. The direct connection to Hakata station makes Fukuoka an excellent gateway to much of southern Japan. Brief details are provided of: a) service patterns; b) journey times; and c) a third underground metro line, which will start from an interchange with the Kuko line at Hakata station, and will run westwards to terminate around Togire or Hashimoto. Included in this 16 km is a branch which will run northwards through the city centre.
