RESEARCH IN DRINKING AND DRIVING: A SHORT REVIEW AND ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF RESEARCH HITHERTO CONDUCTED
A brief review of what is known about drinking and driving is presented. Information obtained from roadside studies, accident investigation, and laboratory experimentation is discussed. The ability of laboratory studies to provide valid information concerning accident causation is questioned and a number of weaknesses found in both laboratory and field experimentation are noted. The suggestion is sumbitted that relevant research requires a clear look at the actual problem, which is alcohol-involved accidents and the antecedent effect of alcohol on driving behaviour. A clinical interview study using accident- involved drinking drivers is proposed to fulfill this purpose and its aim and design are compared to that of the U.S. D.O.T. Tri-Level Study, presently being conducted. An annotated bibliography of alcohol and driving research follows this introduction. /HSRI/
