FUELLING AROUND
This article examines Amsterdam's use of natural gas vehicles (NGVs), and briefly reports alternative fuels initiatives in the UK and Europe. The European Natural Gas Vehicle Conference was held in Amsterdam in December 1993. The International Association for NGVs is looking at all aspects of the safe and economic use of natural gas in vehicles. In Amsterdam, evaluations of NGVs and experimental use of NGVs are occurring in several transport sectors. Two of the canal boats, which convey many tourists round Amsterdam, run on compressed natural gas (CNG). The municipal vehicle fleet of Amsterdam's energy distribution company EA runs at least 40 of its 500 cars on CNG, and expects to have 200 operating NGVs by 1995. Three CNG buses and three liquid petroleum gas (LPG) buses are running in Amsterdam as an experiment, and 30 buses may later be converted to whichever form of gas power is found to work better. EA is proceeding with its EV25 Pilot Project, where 25 electric vehicles will be used in 15 different municipal services. In the UK, British Gas plc is the driving force behind alternative fuels initiatives, and aims to have 200,000 NGVs on the road by 2000. Several English local authorities are conducting CNG and LPG bus trials. Similar trials are running in five other European countries.
