TAGUS TASK
This short article describes the specifications for the design and construction of Portugal's 550 million pound Tagus crossing. The 18 km long crossing has been split into a number of sections, and each of the four designers will work on a particular stretch. The 420 m cable stayed main span will be designed by ECTUDES Gecti. Approach viaducts at each end of the link will be designed by PROPONTE of Portugal and Trafalgar House Technology will work on the 6 km long central viaduct. The remaining design work, such as the interchanges at each end, the toll plaza, landscaping and geotechnical investigations are to be carried out by COBA of Portugal. The design specifications set out by client Gattel, the Portugese Ministry of Public Works, Transportation and Communications are described briefly. Special attention is given to withstanding earthquakes. The designers had to take two limit states into account: a trafficability ultimate limit state, and a collapse ultimate limit state. Brief details of the piled foundations, the method of construction, and the ground conditions (alluvium) are presented, as are details of the cable stayed bridge and the concrete box girder approach viaducts.
