U.S. DIESEL POWERED 25,000 DWT TANKERS
This paper describes the unique tanker program into which the Military Sealift Command of the Department of the Navy has entered with the design and construction, and chartering from a private shipping company a total of nine ocean-going 25,000 DWT tankers to service the Navy worldwide. Diesel-engine power plants were chosen for these tankers, based on a thorough economic study. Two U.S. diesel engine manufacturers were chosen to supply the 7000 BHP main propulsion engines. Each tanker uses two engines on a combining reduction gear, driving a controllable pitch propeller for a total of 14,000 BHP per vessel. A description of the application and operating parameters of the Delaval-Enterprise RV-16-4 diesel engines that are used in five of the tankers will be given to illustrate the utilization of modern high-horsepower, medium-speed diesels in ocean-going tanker service. This application includes the capability for the use of 3500 redwood second residual fuel for the main engines. Since the first tanker of this program has gone into service in September 1974, only limited operating experience data will be given to illustrate the performance of the diesel-powered tanker in actual service.
