AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF A COGAS PROPULSION PLANT IN THE MARITIME INDUSTRY
An economic analysis is made of a COGAS Propulsion Plant using a 35,000 SHP second generation gas turbine engine in combination with a 10,000 SHP waste heat steam plant, driving a 45,000 SHP CRP. The anslysis begins by reviewing the various types of commercial ships (e.g., liners, tramps, etc.) and presents their operating characteristics. Next, shipping costs for the above type ship's are broken down into their various elements (e.g., fuel, operating, capitalization). A sensitivity analysis is then presented which shows what will happen to the "Cost of Propulsion in 1981 with various changes in key economic factors (e.g., interest, inflation, fuel costs). Comparison is then made between the performance characteristics of a COGAS plant and six different propulsion plants currently in use in the Maritime Industry. This comparison is then converted into a matrix of economic comparisons projected forward to the year 1981. Sample calculations are presented which indicate the method of economic computation. Finally, some discussion is given to the basis for determining cost of such a plant. This includes prototype costs and estimates on the slope of the "learning curve" with cumulative units.
