VERTICAL UPLIFT CAPACITY OF HORIZONTAL ANCHORS
Soil anchors provide resistance to uplift forces. The present paper provides a theory for vertical uplift capacity of shallow foundations and anchors in general cohesion-friction soil. The theory was developed by using the method of characteristics coupled with a log-spiral failure surface. Uplift capacity factors for the effects of cohesion, surcharge, and density are established as functions of embedment ratio and angle of friction. The predictions from the proposed theory are compared with available experimental observations as well as with the widely used theory of Meyerhof and Adams (1968).
