ICEBREAKING MODEL TESTS OF THE 140-FOOT WYTM
Icebreaking model tests were conducted with models of the 140-foot WYTM which has been recently designed by the Coast Guard Naval Engineering Division. The WYTM is an icebreaking tugboat which will replace the aging 110-foot tugs on the Great Lakes and on the East Coast. The objectives of this model test program were (1) To determine the icebreaking resistance of the WYTM as a function of velocity in uniform ice 1, 1.5, 2, and 2.5 feet thick; (2) To determine the effect of hull-ice friction on resistance by testing models with high and low coefficients of friction; and (3) To confirm the validity of dual model testing by towing two models side-by-side and comparing the measured resistance with single model test results. To achieve these objectives, a series of tests was conducted in the Arctic Ice Model Basin during May 1975. Using test data, an equation was determined to predict full-scale resistance of the tug in ice.
