WINTER MAINTENANCE AND GROUNDWATER IN THE ROAD DISTRICT. UUSIMAA, FINLAND
Uusimaa is a province on the southern coast of Finland, surrounding Helsinki. Its soil contains several valuable groundwater basins, the saline contents of which are increasing, with winter deicing salting as one reason. The Uusimaa Road District administration has studied the problem in its area during three years, together with the environmental authorities. To provide for the development of the situation, a follow-up system has been established, the solvent salting technique has been developed and protection needs have been examined. The situation is satisfactory, and it is believed to be under control. The project continues.
