THREE-DIMENSIONAL SEISMIC ANALYSIS OF LA VILLITA DAM. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

This is a discussion of a paper with the above title by A.W. Elgamal, published in Volume 118, Number 12, December 1992, of this journal. The discussion focuses on estimating the potential settlement of an embankment dam's crest with relation to available freeboard. Ground accelerations that may occur at the damsite and an approximation of the extent to which the accelerations might be amplified from the base to the top of the embankment are required. Mr. Jansen suggests his simplified methods for estimating the yield acceleration and the crest settlement. He notes that simulation of dam behavior by a mathematical model entails uncertainties related to the seismic environment and the dam itself. The discussion is followed by a closure from the author.
