TRAFFIC IMPACT ASSESSMENT SOFTWARE. EXSTEND: A DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR TRAFFIC IMPACT ASSESSMENT

The computer based Expert System providing guidance for development proposals is described. The software provides a supp by encouraging the operator to make decisions rather than providing a description. An appropriate scale of analysis is def and advice is provided for suitable analytical procedures. The method applies consistent guidelines for Traffic Impact Analysis. The system assists in the identification of network and junction improvements, the provision infrastructure and the rate of improvement, the efficient distribution of funds, the evaluation alternative strategies and the identification of locations where impacts can be minimised. Details are given of the three princip components defining the expert system and the important characteristics for analysing traffic impact assessment. The syst base represents traffic impact methodology using a combination of rules and associated explanatory text. The scale of analysis is identified using a scoring system where weights can be applied to the development characteristics to define the appropriate study area size. The method of assessment is related to the number of junctions and methods of junction control within the area. The format of the output consultation document can be selected to mee specific requirements.
