AN EXPERIMENTAL INTEGRATED SYSTEM FOR APPLICATION OF A COMPUTER IN SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY

To arrive at an integrated system for the use of a computer in the shipbuilding industry attention is first paid to the requirements of a system for communication between shipbuilder and computer. The result is a problem-oriented language, CLAS. For this language a compiler, formulated in ALGOL 60, has been developed for the computer CDC 3300. The structure of CALS is similar to some extent to ALGOL 60. The quantities used however are adapted to the application concerned; simple variables, curves, lists and components being used. During the execution of the compiled CALS program a software paging technique is applied to control the large amount of data necesary in shipbuilding calculations, even when only a small core store is available. For the description of curves the so-called gensplines are introduced--generalisations of the spline curves. For gensplines the curve between two given points is described by a third degree polynomial in the system of axes with x-axis along the chord. In general slope and curvature are continuous at the given points, if this is not necessary it can be indicated. Integration and interpolation for gensplines are described in ALGOL 60 since these are important tools in the ship calculations. Within this experimental system attention is given to hydrostatic calculations, smoothing of the hull shape and shell-plate development.
