REHABILITATION OF NIZAMUDDIN BRIDGE ACROSS RIVER YAMUNA AT DELHI

The paper describes the rehabilitation of a major bridge across the Yamuna at Delhi which has been recently strengthened using all types of repair techniques. Incidentally, repair work of such massive magnitude had never been taken up before in India. Efforts have been made to describe in brief the nature of distress, inspection and survey and the various stages of execution. The paper highlights the constraints and difficulties encountered in a repair work of such magnitude to be completed in very short time, keeping a portion of the bridge always open for traffic during the entire period of repairs. The support system to the water main pipes had to be changed without disturbing the pipes. Even a minor mishap would have meant no drinking water for the South Delhi colonies. This could not have been achieved without the active participation and close coordination between engineers and other departments such as M.C.D., traffic police, etc. The paper concludes with recommendations that bridge rehabilitation is a complex problem which requires a specialised repair management team to achieve the best results.
