OPPORTUNITIES FOR PERMAFROST-RELATED RESEARCH ASSOCIATED WITH THE TRANS-ALASKA PIPELINE SYSTEM

The workshop and the resulting report presented here reviews past, present and planned investigations associated with the pipeline system, identifies new research opportunities that may have gone unrecognized, and suggests appropriate mechanisms of coordination and implementation of recommended research activities, methods of efficient data analysis and interpretation, and information transfer to the scientific communities within the private and public sectors. The report focuses on those topics in the physical sciences that are closely associated with permafrost, its climatic control, and its response to man's activities. The subjects covered include surficial geology, geomorphology, soils and related engineering properties and behavior, vegetation, and hydrology, including snow, ice, and surface water and groundwater topics. The period covered here includes the preconstruction, the construction and the early operational phases. The research activities associated with the preconstruction phase involve selective analyses of a large existing volume of data from experimental facilities and route investigations. The construction phase provided opportunity for the observation and monitoring of the ditch, cuts, and pile holes and the subsequent performances and facilities. The early operational phase will provide opportunity for field observations related to the response to permafrost to man-made facilities, the distribution of natural vegetation, soils and subsurface conditions along latitudinal and altitudinal variations in terrain, and long-term revegetation responses.
