AN INTEGRATED FUTURE FOR BIRMINGHAM'S TRAVELLERS

Birmingham's Blueprint Objectives form part of the DRIVE II programme concerned with the Integrated Road Transport Environment (IRTE) concept. This article describes two aspects of the Blueprint programme - urban traffic control and public transport. The latest SCOOT technology which is being installed will ultimately control over 1000 traffic installations and cut delays by 20%. Data from radial routes in the city is fed to a control room where the information is displayed as video data projected on to a map and by banks of CCTV monitors. The Public Transport Passenger Information System being installed by Centro will use a Global Positioning System for bus location. Information will be available on a telephone enquiry line, at on-street screens and bus stops. Vehicle mounted tags will ensure bus priority at traffic lights.
