SETT PAVING COMPARED: WORKING CONDITIONS, QUALITY, PRODUCTIVITY, AND COST

STRAATWERK VERGELEKEN: ARBEIDSOMSTANDIGHEDEN, KWALITEIT, PRODUKTIVITEIT EN KOSTEN

This publication is based on an investigation into eight sett paving projects in residential streets in the Netherlands, where time-and- motion studies have been carried out. The aim is to analyse and compare the different working methods (sett paving, manual and mechanical laying). Attention is paid to the working conditions of the paviours, the quality of pavement per individual project, and the productivity and cost of each working method. From the investigation into the various paving projects it is established, that with adequate standards of workmanship a good pavement can be attained with any of the working methods. From information gained from the time-and-motion studies a form is developed on which detailed calculations for a pavement can be set out. This form is also used to make an accountable comparison between the number of man-hours per square metre of paving per working method. It is concluded that wherever possible mechanical laying should be used in preference to manual laying and sett paving. The various methods of mechanical laying are covered in further detail.
