AUTOMATED MICROSCOPY FOR WEAR DEBRIS ANALYSIS

An approach to automate the process of visually examining ferrograms or filtergrams, as used in wear debris analysis, is described. Image processing techniques have been extensively explored and used in biomedical, remote sensing and robotic vision applications and are equally applicable to wear particle analysis. The advantages of the application of automated microscopy to wear debris analysis are quite clear and include, making the evaluation more quantitative and precise; standardization of the evaluation in terms of the procedure and reportage; the accumulation of machine condition history for trending; and the removal of tedium from the human task.
