AUSTRALIAN MARITIME COLLEGE: WHY SEAFARING IS LOOKING UP DOWN UNDER
The Australian Maritime College, located in Tasmania, is characterized in this descriptive article as being one of the most technology-driven maritime colleges in the world. Facilities include ShipSim, a computerized ship simulator that is used as a training aid and features a television panorama of ports and ship traffic; a huge indoor tank that provides a realistic setting in which students can practice such procedures as those for abandoning ship; and the Ship Hydrodynamic Centre, whose towing tank can be used to test and evaluate hull-shape performance in calm waters and in rough-weather conditions.
