THEORY AND APPLICATION OF THE SHARPS ACOUSTIC POSITIONING SYSTEM

The Sonic High Accuracy Ranging and Positioning System (SHARPS) is designed for precise underwater survey, tracking and navigation. Optimized for accuracy rather than range, SHARPS achieves precision an order of magnitude greater than that of longer range systems. In addition, SHARPS is almost immune to multipath effects and has a proven record of success in high multipath environments. These properties, coupled with its low cost and rugged design, have made SHARPS the system of choice for a growing number of precision, short range positioning tasks. This paper explains how SHARPS works and discusses recent applications and enhancements.
