FORTHCOMING IMO LEGISLATION FOR THE SUBDIVISION AND DAMAGE STABILITY OF RORO AND OTHER DRY CARGO SHIPS

The International Maritime Organization has developed requirements for the subdivision and damage stability of dry cargo ships, which include ro/ro ships, based on probabilistic concepts. The author explains the probabilistic concepts that were used in developing these requirements and that represent a major change from current deterministic methods of damage stability assessment that are specified by existing international conventions and codes. These concepts address the probability of damage occurring at specific locations throughout a ship. They adopt a more rational approach to longitudinal subdivision by considering the likelihood of a damage resulting in the flooding of only one compartment or of any number of compartments that are longitudinally, transversely or vertically adjacent.
